astriumAstrium is a space industry leader in civil and defence space systems, with world-class skills and extensive prime contractor experience across all sectors.
Astrium is the European specialist for access to space and manned space activities. In the civil sector, it designs, develops and produces Ariane launchers and is industrial prime contractor for the European contribution to the International Space Station. In the defence sector, it designs, develops and produces the ballistic missile systems for France's deterrent force.
Astrium has the expertise to define, simulate and evaluate ballistic missile defence architectures, as well as the competences and know-how to develop, qualify and produce space-based early warning systems and exo-atmospheric interception systems.
Recognition of this capability led NATO to select the transatlantic consortium TeamSAIC including Astrium in 2004, 2008 and 2010 to perform feasibility studies for a missile defence system protecting the NATO territory in Europe, where the Astrium Exoguard exoatmospheric interceptor concept was considered. In September 2006, NATO also selected the SAIC team to develop the first phase of a theatre ballistic missile defence system where Astrium is leading the systems engineering tasks and is responsible for the threat definition, leveraging its proven track record in engineering and integration of large space systems and its expertise in ballistic missile systems.
In February 2009, Ariane 5 put into orbit the two Spirale demonstrators developed under the prime role of Astrium. They pave the way to a future space-based early warning system to be operational by the end of the decade, that would be part of the French contribution to the NATO territorial missile defense architecture.
